Messi Cup 2026: Lionel Messi Confirms Expanded U-16 Tournament in Miami

Lionel Messi's Messi Cup will return to Miami for its second edition in October, with the youth tournament doubling in size to bring together 16 elite U-16 academies from around the world.

The 2026 edition will take place from October 25 to November 1 at Inter Miami's facilities in Fort Lauderdale, including Inter Miami CF Stadium and the Florida Blue Training Center.

The tournament is organised by 525 Rosario, the production company founded by Messi.

The expansion is a major step forward for a competition that only made its debut in December 2025.

The inaugural tournament featured eight teams, with River Plate eventually crowned champions.

For the second edition, the number of participating academies has doubled to 16, allowing more young players to compete against leading youth sides from different footballing regions.

Which Teams Will Play in the 2026 Messi Cup?

Inter Miami has confirmed 16 participating academies for this year's tournament.

They are:

- Inter Miami CF

- Ajax

- Inter Milan

- Atlético de Madrid

- Benfica

- Barcelona

- Palmeiras

- Arsenal

- Newell's Old Boys

- Flamengo

- UE Cornellà

- Manchester City

- Boca Juniors

- River Plate

- Independiente del Valle

- Chelsea

The field includes academies from Europe, South America and North America, giving the competition a genuinely international character.

The presence of Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atlético Madrid, River Plate, Boca Juniors and other established football academies also gives the tournament plenty of interest beyond its host club.

Messi Explains Why He Created the Tournament

Messi has stressed that the competition is intended to provide young players with more than just matches.

According to the Inter Miami announcement, the Argentina captain said the Messi Cup was created to give young players a unique experience on and off the pitch while helping them understand what it means to compete at the highest international level.

He also welcomed the tournament's growth and the opportunity to bring players from major clubs together so they can compete, share the experience and enjoy football.

That developmental focus is important because the competition is aimed specifically at players at a formative stage of their careers.

For many of the participants, the Messi Cup will offer an early opportunity to face players from football cultures and academy systems they would rarely encounter in domestic competition.

The Messi Cup Is Growing Quickly

The scale of the second edition represents a significant increase from the tournament's first year.

The inaugural Messi Cup was held in Miami from December 9 to 14, 2025, with eight clubs competing in the U-16 competition. River Plate won the first edition.

Inter Miami's own U-16 side finished sixth after facing Newell's Old Boys, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea and Barcelona during the tournament.

Their final match was a 6-4 defeat to Barcelona in the fifth-place game.

The move from eight teams to 16 means the 2026 competition will have a considerably larger field and a wider representation of international academies.

When and Where Will the Messi Cup 2026 Take Place?

The second Messi Cup is scheduled for October 25 to November 1, 2026, in the Miami area.

Inter Miami says matches will be hosted at Inter Miami CF Stadium and the Florida Blue Training Center in Fort Lauderdale.

The official Messi Cup website also lists the event for October 25 to November 1 in South Florida.

The tournament's match schedule for individual teams is expected to be announced separately.

Why the Messi Cup Matters for Young Players

Youth tournaments involving major academies are not unusual, but the Messi Cup brings together clubs from several different football environments in one competition.

That can expose young players to different tactical approaches, styles of play and levels of competition much earlier in their development.

It also gives scouts, coaches and supporters an opportunity to watch some of the players who could eventually emerge from these academies into professional football.

Of course, appearing at the Messi Cup does not guarantee a professional career.

At U-16 level, development remains the priority, and players still have several stages to navigate before reaching senior football.

For Messi, that appears to be part of the point because the tournament is designed to give young players experience at a higher international level while allowing them to enjoy the game during an important stage of their development.

When Is the 2026 Messi Cup?

The second edition of the Messi Cup will take place from October 25 to November 1, 2026, in the Miami area.

It will feature 16 U-16 academies, twice the number that competed in the inaugural edition.

With some of the world's biggest football academies involved, the tournament will provide another opportunity to see the next generation of young talent competing on an international stage.
