João Cancelo has returned to Barcelona with more than just a desire to settle back into familiar surroundings.
The Portugal international has already set his sights on competing for the biggest prize in European club football.
During his presentation as a Barcelona player, Cancelo was asked about the prospect of facing Real Madrid and whether beating Barça's biggest domestic rival carries extra motivation.
His response was clear... he wants to win against every opponent.
“I want to beat every team, not only Real Madrid. I am competitive.”
Cancelo's comments reflect the mentality he wants to bring into his third spell with the Catalan club.
Rather than singling out El Clásico, the full-back says his focus is on competing against whoever stands in Barcelona's way.
Cancelo Has His Eyes on Europe
The 32 year old also spoke about Barcelona's ambitions in the Champions League.
“We will go now to try our very best to win the Champions League.”
That target carries particular weight for Barcelona, who have not lifted the European trophy since 2015.
Cancelo believes the current squad has enough quality to compete for it and wants to play his part in the challenge.
His comments also fit with the mood surrounding Barcelona's squad after a busy summer.
The club has added Rodri to the midfield and brought Cancelo back permanently after his previous loan spells.
For Cancelo, the return is also personal.
He has previously described Barcelona as a childhood dream and has now secured a permanent move after leaving Al Hilal.
