Liverpool escaped St James’ Park with a point after a dramatic 2–2 draw against Newcastle United on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
It looked as though Matthias Jaissle's Newcastle would celebrate a winning start to his reign when Joe Willock restored their lead late in the second half.
But Liverpool refused to go quietly.
With the clock deep into stoppage time, Victor Muñoz was brought down inside the penalty area, giving Dominik Szoboszlai the chance to rescue a point from the spot.
The Hungary international kept his composure and converted the penalty in the 99th minute.
Newcastle Strike Early
Newcastle made the stronger start and took the lead after just five minutes.
Anthony Elanga finished a rapid counterattack to give the hosts an early advantage and send St James' Park into celebration.
Liverpool struggled to find their rhythm during the opening period, with Jaissle's side applying pressure and looking dangerous whenever they won the ball.
The Magpies went into half-time ahead and had every reason to believe they could give their new manager the perfect Premier League debut.
Liverpool Fight Back
Liverpool eventually found their response shortly after the interval.
Cody Gakpo brought the visitors level with a well-taken finish, but Newcastle immediately regained the advantage.
Joe Willock struck just minutes later to make it 2–1, putting Liverpool back under pressure.
The result appeared to be heading Newcastle's way until the final moments.
Muñoz and Szoboszlai Rescue Liverpool
Liverpool pushed forward desperately in search of an equaliser, and their persistence finally paid off.
Victor Muñoz won a penalty deep into stoppage time after being brought down in the Newcastle box.
Szoboszlai stepped up and delivered.
His penalty in the 99th minute made it 2–2 and ensured Andoni Iraola avoided defeat in his first Premier League match as Liverpool manager.
For Newcastle, it was a painful ending to what had been an impressive performance in Jaissle's first competitive match in charge.
A Point Each, But Different Feelings
Newcastle will probably feel they left two points behind after leading twice and being seconds away from victory.
Liverpool, meanwhile, will be relieved to leave with something after being forced to chase the game for long periods.
The draw also provided an entertaining introduction to two new managerial eras, with Jaissle beginning his Newcastle tenure and Iraola taking charge of Liverpool for the first time in a competitive Premier League match.
For Iraola, the late penalty could prove an important moment in his Liverpool story.
For Jaissle, there was plenty to like despite the frustrating ending.
Newcastle 2–2 Liverpool.
One point each, and a Premier League opening weekend thriller to remember.
