Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season with a narrow 1-0 victory over Coventry City, with Erling Haaland once again providing the decisive moment on a day that also marked Enzo Fernández's debut for the club.
Haaland headed home in the first half to secure all three points for Enzo Maresca's side, while Fernández immediately showed why City were prepared to spend a British record equalling £125 million to bring him from Chelsea.
The Argentine midfielder played a key role in the build up to the winning goal, supplying Antoine Semenyo before his cross found Haaland.
Haaland reaches another major milestone
The goal was more than just a match winner for Haaland.
It was the Norwegian's 300th career club goal, another remarkable milestone for a striker who continues to score at an extraordinary rate.
He also moved to 20 headed goals in Premier League history, becoming Manchester City's leading scorer by that method.
For City, his reliability remains one of the biggest advantages of the new Maresca era.
Even when the team does not turn its possession and chances into a comfortable scoreline, Haaland gives them a proven route to finding the breakthrough.
That was particularly important against a stubborn Coventry side that made City work for the victory.
Fernández makes an immediate impression
The biggest talking point beyond the result was Fernández's first appearance in a Manchester City shirt.
The £125m signing had only just completed his move from Chelsea, but an injury to Nico O'Reilly shortly before kick off resulted in Fernández being moved into the starting XI.
Rather than looking overwhelmed by the occasion, he settled quickly into City's midfield and showed composure on the ball.
His involvement in the goal offered an early indication of what he can bring.
Fernández found Semenyo with a well timed pass, allowing the winger to deliver for Haaland to finish.
That connection could become significant as City adjust to life after Rodri.
Fernández is not a direct replacement in terms of playing style, but his passing range, technical quality and ability to influence possession give Maresca another important midfield option.
The Premier League's official squad listing now includes Fernández among City's midfielders alongside Elliot Anderson, Rayan Cherki and others, underlining the depth available to Maresca.
Ndiaye also makes his City debut
Iliman Ndiaye was another new arrival to make his first appearance for Manchester City.
The Senegalese forward joined from Everton shortly before the transfer window closed and was introduced as City continue to reshape their attacking options.
His arrival gives Maresca another versatile attacking player capable of operating in different positions.
While Fernández had a direct contribution to the winning goal, Ndiaye's debut was more about getting his first minutes and beginning the process of adapting to his new surroundings.
Maresca later acknowledged that there were areas of Ndiaye's positioning that still needed improvement.
Coventry make City work for the points
The 1-0 scoreline does not fully reflect City's control of the match.
City dominated possession and completed 803 passes, their highest total since 2023, but Coventry remained competitive and created enough danger late in the game to make the champions uncomfortable.
Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was called upon to make important saves, including a late stop to deny Ellis Simms.
Frank Lampard's Coventry side can therefore take encouragement from the performance despite leaving the Etihad without a point.
For City, however, the more important outcome was maintaining their 100 per cent league record.
What the result means for Manchester City
Three matches into the new Premier League campaign, City have collected nine points and moved to the top of the table.
The performance was not flawless, but that may make the victory more significant rather than less.
City have already had to introduce several new players, while Maresca is still establishing how his squad will function.
Fernández's debut gives him another major midfield option, Ndiaye adds further attacking depth, and Haaland continues to provide the goals.
The biggest question now is how quickly those new pieces can become a coherent team.
If Fernández can reproduce the composure he showed against Coventry while developing his understanding with City's other midfielders and attackers, his arrival could become one of the defining parts of City's transition under Maresca.
For now, though, Haaland remains the difference maker.
Another goal, another three points, and another milestone for the Norwegian as Manchester City continue their perfect start.
