Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has played down concerns about Lamine Yamal not smiling as much recently, insisting that players do not have to appear happy every day.
Yamal has attracted attention during the early part of the season, with some observers questioning his mood after noticing that the 19 year old has appeared less expressive than usual.
Flick, however, does not believe there is necessarily anything to worry about.
“It's always good to see the players smiling, but not all days are the same. Even myself, I don't smile every day.”
Flick Happy With Yamal’s Progress
The Barcelona manager also pointed to Yamal's demanding schedule and recent return to club football.
According to Flick, Yamal played at the World Cup after recovering from a serious injury before taking a three week holiday and subsequently returning to Barcelona training.
That workload means Flick is more interested in the youngster's performances and commitment than whether he is constantly smiling.
“Elche was not his best game, but he worked for the team, and I was very happy.”
Yamal subsequently played the full 90 minutes against Athletic Club, giving Flick another reason to be encouraged by his condition.
Yamal Showing Signs of His Best Form
Flick believes the Athletic Club match provided clear signs that Yamal is getting back towards his highest level.
“We also saw him delivering his usual level at its highest in some moments.”
For a player returning from a serious injury and a busy international schedule, regular playing time is also important.
Flick believes completing a full match was beneficial for Yamal at this stage of his recovery and preparation.
Flick Calls for Support
Rather than focusing on Yamal's facial expressions, Flick wants those around the youngster to support him as he continues to regain his best form.
The German coach revealed that Yamal has also been performing well during training.
“In training he has been excellent. We have to support him, and that's what we want to see from him.”
That message is particularly important given the level of attention surrounding Yamal at Barcelona.
At just 19, he is already one of the club's most important players and is expected to play a major role in Flick's plans.
For now, Flick sees no reason to make an issue out of Yamal's lack of smiles.
He may not be smiling every day, but according to his manager, Lamine Yamal is working well, training excellently, and gradually returning to his best level.
